Public Space Activation
During #COP17, a singificant amount of energy, time and resources was put into operating and helping facilitate the OccupyCOP17 physical site known as ‘Speakers’ Corner‘.
While not a ‘total’ occupation, General Assemblies were held daily in the spirit of ‘consensus democracy’ principles. The space was located right outside the official venue, giving us access to all the media passing by and on the lookout for the juicy story or sexy photo.
The DurbanKnights Collective used the ‘Collective’ Artspace ( remote JungleHouse module used for meetings, strategy sessions, painting banners/posters and networking. These banners were then used in the OccupyCop17 site
The public space was used for a variety of activities, creative and meeting space. The most important function was the General Assemblies, which created an open public platform for people outside the conference to interface with delegates and representatives. It was a clear open space where anyone could learn, ask and share. Lots of creative activities and some guerrilla gardening was hosted here over the two week period of #COP17
In Rio, public space played an integral meeting space, the magic running especially in the ‘spaces between’. The Youth Camp, The Ocupa site and many comida à quilo or cafes between.
